You are forgiven the little rant. Rant away on my behalf, I could not agree more! Personally I never think summer is over until the clocks change, but I do live below the South Downs. I love the ‘random bloke with hose’. Conjures up a picture. I absolutely agree with you about watering judiciously with a hose. Super article, thank you.

I’ve been working round my garden removing all traces of crispy foliage and the casualties of this summer. Like you I am now rather excited by the gaps that have opened up. I look forward to filling those spaces with (hopefully!) more suitable replacements. I would be very interested to learn more about the installation of an automatic drip irrigation system. Watering pots and raised beds became rather tedious this summer!

Such an interesting read from down here in the southern hemisphere. With the reticulation, drip systems etc, which are fed from rainwater saved in butts and troughs presumably, what do you reticulate with when the tanks and butts are empty?

We have automatic systems throughout our drought-prone garden in Tasmania - drips and sprays, but last summer, we were reduced to Stage 4 which is no hose, no reticulation at all. We would use nothing but bucketed grey water. The only way anyone could water successfully was if they had a line of tanks which were filled from previous wet years and which they then pumped.
